Take Action: Four ways to stop Trumpcare this week

Four ways to stop Trumpcare this week

(j/k, we added even MORE ways to stop Trumpcare–check out Wednesday and Thursday)

A Senate vote on Trumpcare could happen as soon as Thursday. Here are four ways to help kill the bill.

  1. Visit protectourcare.us and share your story. We’re more than halfway toward our goal of 500 stories. This week we’ll email them to to senate staffers, and also print a bundle for hand-delivery to Sens. Cornyn and Cruz’s offices.
  2. We’re hosting three storytelling work sessions this week where you can share your stories, on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday nights! See below for details.
  3. Hand-deliver your own concerns to Senate offices. It’s too late for postal mail, so when you call–and yes, continue to call–arrange an appointment to deliver a letter or postcard expressing your concerns about the bill. If you can’t get an appointment, go anyway, and slide your letter under the door if no one is there.
  4. Visit trumpcareten.org to find friends in states with more “movable” Republican senators, and encourage those friends to act. (The 10 states are Alaska, Arkansa, Arizona, Colorado, Louisiana, Maine, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia; be sure your friends in those states are calling their senators!)

8 a.m. to noon San Antonio: Rally to Block Show Me Your Papers Law SB4

655 E Cesar E Chavez Blvd, San Antonio, TX

From the organizers:

On the day of the first hearing in the lawsuit to stop Texas’ show-me-your-papers law, SB4, we’re going to gather outside of the courthouse to show that Texans reject hate in their state. We reject SB4 because it encourages and legalizes the racial profiling of immigrants and people of color. We will show we stand united against oppression, racism and hatred.

The Senate and House healthcare repeal bills will decimate our healthcare system, leaving millions uninsured and many more with higher costs and worse care. Devastating cuts and caps to Medicaid will destroy the lives of people with disabilities, children, women and seniors. People will die from not receiving the needed medical attention.

7 p.m. Human Chain at Texas Capitol

We could be just days away from the Senate voting on an Affordable Care Act repeal bill that is both disastrous and cruel. But we’re not going to let them vote without hearing the loud voices of Texans!

This may be our last chance to show the Senate what we’re made of – to tell them NO to gutting Medicaid, NO repeal of the ACA, and NO to Trumpcare.

Thursday night we will surround the Texas State Capitol with a human chain–circling the Capitol with our collective voices, our bodies and our power. Join us!

IF EVER THERE WERE A NEED TO SHOW UP IN PERSON, THIS IS IT! WE NEED AT LEAST 500 PEOPLE TO MAKE A FULL CIRCLE AROUND THE CAPITOL!

WHAT TO BRING:
Write a personal letter about how the ACA or Medicaid has impacted your life. Include your concerns about Trumpcare and backdoor dealings. Bring the letter to read out loud or simply hand it in for us to deliver to a senator staffer. You don’t have to speak if you don’t want to, supporting others is just as important. Bring your friends!!! Bring your children and babies!!!! Get the word out. We need BIG NUMBERS in attendance!! (Also, probably bring your bug spray.)

7 to 9:30 p.m. Community Event: Breaking Down Walls:True Stories from Local Immigrants

Mexican American Cultural Center
600 River St

Bear witness to the silent suffering within our community’s local undocumented immigrants, as they share their experience of struggling through fear, intimidation, and prejudice in their pursuit to forge a better life in the United States. Six local community members will share personal stories, in ten minutes or less, on their experience as immigrants in Austin. Tellers include locals Alex Gutierrez, Julian Copado, Cinthya Zapata, Monica Tornoe, and others.

Live stories will be interspersed with music by Carlos Millo Ufret from Los Bohemios Perdidos, Salvadorian singers and songwriters Teresita and Mauricio Callejas, Colombian singer Diana Naranjo, and singer-songwriter Juan Antonio de Los Angeles with Ana Cantú on percussion. The event includes a gallery display of over a hundred hand-written stories of undocumented immigrants from our local Hispanic community. In addition, there will be an art installation focusing on the Hispanic immigrant experience.

The event is free to the public. A suggested $5 donation will go to support immigration programs of Grassroots Leadership, a local nonprofit that provides support, protection, and justice for immigrants impacted by U.S. detention and deportation policies.
