URGENT: Call Cornyn on Betsy DeVos, well, always

**This action is targeting Sen. Cornyn’s DC office**

UPDATE 2/1/17 6:30 pm: As of now a final vote has not been scheduled, so keep the pressure on! Keep calling, faxing, and carrier-pigeoning Cornyn’s office.

GOP Sens. Susan Collins (Maine) and Lisa Murkowski in back-to-back speeches on the Senate floor announced today that they would OPPOSE Betsy DeVos’s nomination to be Education secretary.

Sen. Cornyn has yet to take a strong position on Betsy DeVos, who is profoundly unqualified to be Secretary of Education. There is an opportunity to turn his vote to NO.

From our earlier NO on DeVos script:

I am calling to urge you to vote “NO” on the confirmation of Betsy DeVos for Secretary of Education. DeVos has no training or experience in education and supports dangerous and unproven policies that would funnel billions of taxpayer dollars to private entrepreneurs. This is both unconstitutional and against the values of the millions of Texans who believe in the value of public education. Our children deserve better – vote “NO”.

Research Notes on Betsy DeVos

She has NO experience in Public Education.

  • Never Been a Teacher
  • Never Served in a Public School System Leadership

Organizations that DeVos has supported or led

  • Spent MILLIONS to promote policies that directed Public School Funds to either For-Profit Schools or Virtual Charter Schools that have NO accountability on how well these schools serve students or how the tax-payers dollars are spent.

  1. Done–faxed. God bless Faxzero, because damned if I can ever get through. Here’s what I sent:

    Good afternoon, Senator Cornyn.

I am writing to urge you to vote “NO” on the confirmation of Betsy DeVos for Secretary of Education. DeVos has no training or experience in education and supports dangerous and unproven policies that would funnel billions of taxpayer dollars to private entrepreneurs. This is both unconstitutional and against the values of the millions of Texans who believe in the value of public education. Our children deserve better – please vote “NO.”
I have a niece with Down syndrome. Thanks to federally funded programs De Vos opposes, my niece is extremely high-functioning, and attending her public school (which De Vos has no experience with and wants to divert funding from) with her correct grade level. My niece has a future and a chance to be a contributing member of society thanks to the federal programs at her public school. I urge you to vote against De Vos, a candidate who would do inestimable damage to both.
In addition, De Vos has shown her lack of qualifications and knowledge of the education system with her total ignorance of the IDEA program; was unwilling to state that guns don’t belong in schools (for the ridiculous reason of grizzly bears); and believes in a charter school system that will benefit religious schools and the wealthy with no accountability for students’ learning or how taxpayer money will be spent.
I urge you to defend our education system and the future of our country and VOTE NO on De Vos. Thank you.

    1. I am also in Lubbock and I go through but the Senate voicemail box is apparently full so here is a couple other options I found

      1) leave a message on his website (there is a form)
      https://www.cornyn.senate.gov/contact

      2) call his West Texas office here in Lubbock and leave a message
      806-472-7533

      3) Sign up for twitter (I only use my account to tweet at politicians) & get to him that way

  2. We’re trying here in Lubbock, TX, but cannot get through. No more room for messages, and when we select 3 to speak to a member of his staff, they answer and immediately hang up on us.

  3. We tried and tried and tried, and could not get through. So we sent faxes. I’m sorry, but we thought it was time sensitive, and Senator Cornyn and Senator Cruz are making it near impossible for their constituents voices to be heard in a timely fashion.

    1. This action is specifically targeting his DC office. You can certainly call any and all offices, but since he’s currently physically in that office, it’s very important that his DC staff there hear from us and relay the magnitude of calls they’re receiving.

  4. Got through to leave a messsage. Pleaded that Senator Cornyn remember his humanity needs to trump his role as a republican re. DeVos and J.Sessions, immigrants, etc – said it all.

  5. He’s seemed pretty pro DeVos in the press. Has something changed? I’ve been calling and writing since last week, but his comments to the press made me think he would confirm her.

  6. Just got through. Faxed and left a message. His inbox wasn’t full so there’s still more room for plenty of comments!

  7. could not gt through to staff, and the voice mailbox was full. also, no lack faxing either: Your fax to Honorable John Cornyn at 2102248569 has failed because the receiver’s phone was busy 5 times in a row. Thank you, FaxZero.com

alas. either they have shut down. or we have flooded them.

  8. I called the Austin office – got in after 4 tries. His staffer told me that Cornyn will vote yes for DeVos, but I made my comments anyway and stated that this was too important and to please reconsider. Keep calling – the Senator should hear what we think.

Be sure you give your full name and your zip code, and ask the staffer to make note of your comments.

  9. Senator John Cornyn,

I’ve tried contacting your Washington D.C. office, and your office in Dallas without any luck. All I got was a recording saying the mailbox was full.

I would like you to vote NO to Betsy DeVos as Secretary of Education. She is very unqualified, and seems more interested in private, rather than public education. I watched CSPAN as she was questioned by the Senate Committee. From her comments, her lack of knowledge of public education, accountability, proficiency, and
evasive answers. I think she would be not serve the Public at large. I’m a retired public school teacher, and ask that you help preserve the Constitutional Right for a free and good education for all. Thank you.

  10. As a sucessful educator of title one students, I am very opposed to Betsy DeVos.We have school choice in Texas ,any student may transfer out of a low performing school, and tested high standards. We also are the only advocate for many of our students who represent the nation wide the break down of the home. If our student body was a reflection of a perfect world where every child came from a loving intact family, her idealist methods might work. But, that is not the norm or reality.

  11. so glad our senators actually listened to their constituents instead of kowtowing to the national party. Oh wait…. I loathe these men!
